May 21, 2013 ~ Shabbat BEHA'ALOTEKHA. Maqam SIGAH.

Shabbat Vayesse : ויצא

Summary

Genesis 28:10-32:3

As he begins his journey, Jacob dreams of angels, ascending and descending. Awed, he vows to return from this journey and follow Gods ways. After reaching Haran, he marries Labans daughters, Leah and Rachel, sires children, and prospers while raising cattle for Laban. After twenty years, Jacob finally fulfills his pledge to return to Canaan.

Hosea 11:7–12:12
Envisioning the destruction that lies ahead for the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Hosea alerts the Israelites to cease their wrongdoing. He tells them to return to God and repent before it is too late.
Other opinion: Hosea 12:13-14:10

On Shabbat Vayesse (Genesis 28:10-32:3), Maqam AJAM (meaning 'foreigner' or 'Persian' in Arabic), is applied according to most sources. AJAM, typically reserved for happy occasions (i.e. Sheba Berakhot of a wedding), is applied, because we read about Jacob's wedding. There is a tradition of always transposing H Israel Najara's pizmon (in Maqam Saba), Yedidi Roee Meqimi (page 417), for Semehim Besetam, because this pizmon mentions Rachel coming with her flocks of sheep. According to the Aleppo sources of Abraham E Shrem, and Abraham Dweck, Maqam SABA should be applied for this Shabbat perhaps to facilitate the application of the SABA pizmon mentioned above. Spanish

Hazzanut

The Halabi & the Shami Maqam of this week is Ajam or one of its family members like Girka (Jirka, Sharkah) or Sasgar (Sadhkar).

Even though the maqam is Ajam we must not forget that this parashah talks about Rahel coming with her flocks of sheep.

Since there is a special pizmon which mentions that event, the minhag is , that we must use that pizmon in SABA for Semehim.

The song is Yedidi Ro’i Meqimi (Red Book page 417).
